MOSCOW, RUSSIA

Site surroundings:

The Meteorological Observatory is located on the South-West part of Moscow (7 km from center), which represents near 12 Million inhabitants. Within a 5 km radius of the station, the environment is 60% urban housing and 40% recreational fields. Toward South-West (0.6 km), there is the main University Building with a height of 200 m. Toward North-East (1 km), there is the Moscow-river.

Climate characteristics:

Climate is moderate continental (according to Alisov: a continental zone of the temperate climate). Average temperature in January is -9,6°C and in July 18.5°C. Average annual sunshine duration is 1758 hours. The average number of foggy days in a year is 35, mostly in October-November. The largest amount of cloudiness is observed from October to January (75%-85% of overcast weather).

horizontal illuminance sensor

Comments

Illuminance sensors are calibrated every summer season with a special model instrument which was constructed by the Optical-Physical Measurements Institute of Moscow. The irradiance sensors are calibrated every summer season with an actinometer A-80 which has been calibrated in 1992 using a pyrheliometer N202 from the Geophysical Observatory of Saint-Petersburg. The Meteorological Observatory of Moscow State University is a standard meteorological station, so all the standard meteorological measurements are obtained.

View 1 of the station

Comments

This view is from the northern platform of the station and is looking towards South. There are from front to back, the direct normal irradiance, the global illuminance sensor, the standard pyranometer M-80M and the actinometer A-80, both used for calibration purposes.

View 2 of the station

Comments

This view is from the southern platform of the station and is looking towards South. There are from right to left, under shadow bands: the diffuse illuminance sensor, the Yanishevsky pyranometer modified for measuring photosynthetically active radiation and the Yanishevsky pyranometer.
